Will Turkey upend NATO expansion? US officials seek clarity

WASHINGTON (AP) — With Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan taking an increasingly durable dash opposed to the NATO belonging bids of Finland with every one other accompanied by Sweden in malice of a lengthy way less strident statements from some of his top aides, U.S. officials are trying to determine how solemn the regularly mercurial leader is with every one other accompanied by what it strength lay clasp of to obtain him to spine down.

Amid the contradictory signals from Ankara over the expected applications, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet his Turkish counterpart on Wednesday inside New York inside a new attempt to clarify Ankara's position following foregoing attempts become visible to have only clouded the situation.

Underscoring the sensitivity of the fine diplomacy required to deal accompanied by a potentially recalcitrant ally, the Biden management seems to have taken to ignoring Erdogan saying he cannot permit the set of two nations to fasten NATO due to their alleged support for groups Turkey sees while safety threats. Instead, the management is focusing on remarks made inside closed-door meetings by lower-ranking Turkish officials.

"It is not for us to speak for the Turkish government," State Department spokesperson Ned Price said repeatedly on Tuesday inside response to multiple questions concerning what the U.S. understands Turkey's position to exist with every one other accompanied by whether Turkey had demanded anything from the United States inside return for agreeing to Finland's with every one other accompanied by Sweden's memberships.

Sweden, Finland push ahead accompanied by NATO bids while Turkey objects

At stake for the United States with every one other accompanied by its NATO partners is an chance to respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine by strengthening with every one other accompanied by expanding the alliance — the extremely facing of what President Vladimir Putin hoped to attain inside starting the war.

But Erdogan's suggestions that he could derail Sweden's with every one other accompanied by Finland's belonging hopes too high point a potential frailty that Putin has tried to exploit inside the past — the unwieldy the natural world of the consensus-run alliance where a single subscriber tin chunk actions supported by the other 29.

Initially seen inside Washington with every one other accompanied by other NATO capitals while an easily resolved slight distraction to the procedure of enlarging the alliance inside the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Erdogan's verbal volleys in the direction of Finland with every one other accompanied by Sweden are attracting additional be about while the set of two Nordic nations go at some time closer to submitting ceremonial applications accompanied by the hope of joining while fast while possible.

Even if they are overcome, objections from Turkey, which is the only one of NATO's 30 members to have raised reservations concerning the expansion so far, could delay Finland's with every one other accompanied by Sweden's accession to the alliance for months, mainly if other nations go nearer behind outfit inside seeking concessions for their votes.

Erdogan, who has grown increasingly authoritarian over the years, is known to exist an unpredictable leader with every one other accompanied by there have been occasions when his words have been at understandable likelihood accompanied by what Turkish diplomats or other older officials inside his management have said.

"I don't exclude a possible disconnect in the centre of Turkish diplomats with every one other accompanied by Erdogan. In the past there have been examples of such disconnect," said Barcin Yinan, a journalist with every one other accompanied by commentator on Turkish overseas policy. She said there was a "disconnect" in the centre of Erdogan with every one other accompanied by the Foreign Ministry last year, when the Turkish leader threatened to expel 10 Western diplomats, including the U.S. ambassador, whom he accused of meddling inside Turkey's judiciary.

For instance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters inside Berlin on Sunday following discussions accompanied by Turkish officials that "Turkey has made it understandable that their intention is not to chunk membership." Meanwhile, Blinken with every one other accompanied by other overseas ministers, including Germany's top diplomat, Annalena Baerbock, expressed absolute trust that all NATO members, including Turkey, would greeting the set of two newcomers.

Yet on Monday, Erdogan surprised numerous by doubling down on his censure of Finland with every one other accompanied by Sweden, accusing them of supporting Kurdish militants with every one other accompanied by others whom Turkey considers to exist terrorists with every one other accompanied by of imposing restrictions on military sales to Turkey.

"Neither country has an open, understandable stance opposed to terrorist organizations," Erdogan said. "We cannot speak 'yes' to those who impose sanctions on Turkey, on joining NATO, which is a safety organization."

Asked concerning the disparity, Price, the State Department spokesman, would speak only that Blinken, following gathering accompanied by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavuoglu with every one other accompanied by others over the weekend, "came away accompanied by the same sensory power of trust that there was strong accord for admitting Finland with every one other accompanied by Sweden into the alliance if they choose to join, with every one other accompanied by we're optimistic we'll exist intelligent to conserve that consensus."

Gonul Tol, director of the Turkey program at the Middle East Institute, said that while Erdogan regularly talks a durable line, he tends to go nearer around inside the extremity with every one other accompanied by do the "rational" thing.

"Erdogan is unpredictable. But at the same time, he's a extremely pragmatic actor," she said. Tol said Erdogan likes to discuss terms with every one other accompanied by pushes for "maximalist demands" throughout the negotiations. "He ends up settling for a a large amount of less than that," she said.

She noted that Erdogan's grievances accompanied by Western countries over the Kurds are not new with every one other accompanied by that strains in the centre of Turkey with every one other accompanied by the United States over military supplies are long-standing.

Having been dropped from the F-35 state-of-the-art fighter jet evolution program following buying a Russian air protection system, Turkey has been pressing the U.S. to sell it new F-16 fighters or at the extremely least refurbish its existing fleet. Discussions on both issues are taking place inside Washington this week with every one other accompanied by some officials exist convinced by that while they are unrelated to the NATO enlargement question, resolutions to either could assist prevail on Erdogan to let fall his objections.

Tol agreed with every one other accompanied by said: "This is happening at a hour dated when he's trying to mend ties accompanied by Washington, when Turkey is associated accompanied by inside negotiations to prevail on Congress to sell F-16s to Turkey. This is a hour dated when Erdogan is trying to burnish his likeness while a valuable ally. And this is a hour dated when the invasion of Ukraine has specified him an chance to stretch not here out to Western capitals. So opposed to that background it would exist a extremely theatrical step if Turkey inside fact vetoes the application of Finland with every one other accompanied by Sweden." ___

Crawfish Etouffee Georgia Style Reviews

  • Excellent I had to use what I had on hand which included regular butter, celery, red bell pepper (we dont like the green) and regular salt. All other ingredients were the same. Served over blackened redfish. It was delicious

  • I went with cooking option #2, added shrimp along with my crawfish tails, a few drops of liquid smoke with the seafood in lieu of smoked salt, and a dollop of coconut oil instead of the crawfish fat. Hit it with a shot of pepper sauce and a dash of "Slap Yo Mama" and you have a great, rather easy dish that tastes wonderful Its even better then next day, spooned over an omelette.

  • A very tasty dish. Rich and thick, well worth the effort.

  • Very good A keeper

  • Fabulous flavor, little work. Just my kind of recipe

  • Truly a good recipe. I use celery stalk when I can not find the roots. However, the roots do make it a bit "creamier" and smoother.

Stuffed Chicken Reviews

  • Pretty tasty. I added extra hotsauce. This was a nice change from the typical ways I prepare chicken in our house. I feel like three is something still missing, though- Ill try this recipe again but play around with it a bit.

  • This was great as is. We used large breasts and needed to increase the stuffing. Next time I will double or triple the stuffing.

  • I used green onions instead because they were all the onion I had. This stuffed chicken is delicious I followed another review and doubled the stuffing and added a bit of extra hot sauce. The rest of the chicken did coume out a bit bland, so next time, a little sea salt and freshly ground pepper sprinkled on top will take care of that.

  • Pretty bland........

  • By far, this is a simple recipe that turned out well. I didnt follow the recipe to the letter though. Sauteed spinach with the onions/celery and added pepper and lemon with the hot sauce/mustard combo. Split the chicken breast length wise like a sub sandwinch, but not completely, and stuffed the breast that way keeping it closed with bamboo skewers. Added a little oil, lemon and pepper to the pan again then sauteed the breast the entire time rather than on the grill. The juices helped keep the breast tender with the pan covered.

  • Super simple & super easy. I added achiote and garlic powder to the celery/onion mix. Next time I will double the veggie mix . Hub ??d it asked for extra. Will def make again.

  • I gave this a try last night i changed it up and added bacon and a box of stovetop stuffing and provaloan cheese and some spicy Montreal steak seasoning. Turn out GREAT Pics are before and after

  • Great dish.

Chicken Chili I Reviews

  • Great recipe for chili. A nice change from the typical meat, bean and tomato variety. Id recommend it to anyone.

  • This recipe is also very good with leftover turkey. I cut back on the oregano and added some cayenne, a little cilantro and coriander to the other ingredients spice wise. When adding the chicken/turkey I also add 1/2 c of tequila for more of a southwestern flavor. Making a roux of butter and flour adding slowing before serving will thicken it up nicely. Topping with some fresh chopped tomato, fresh cilantro and chopped red onion is perfect. We call this White Chili.

  • LOVED IT I did make a few changes: used 4 cans of navy beans instead of frozen (cooks faster), We do not like extra spicy, so no chile or jalapeno peppers for us. Instead I put 1/2 tbl chili powder - my family loved it I also did not have cooked chichen so my 1st step was to boil a packed of tenderloins in the chicken broth It worked very well I thickened the broth with corn starch.

  • I like this recipe because of its fairly unusual use of navy beans. Nice change...

  • Followed the recipe as is. Wonderful - a definite keeper Thanks

  • This has potential to be really good, but I didnt think that the mixture of spices went very well together. I also enjoy chili with a tomato base much better.

  • I soak the beans a couple of hours or overnight, then drain and proceed with the recipe as stated. Very Good.

  • Yummy stuff I hate messing with dried beans so I used an equivalent amount in canned (which is about 6-7 c. for 1 lb dry). Interestingly, I used all the chicken broth called for, which normally would have been at least partially soaked up with the beans - so Im not quite sure how this works out if using dry beans. Just as a note, this is more like a white chili and isnt *supposed* to have a tomato base - thats part of the point.

  • No one cared for this

  • I didnt like this. The cloves were overpowering. I might add just a pinch of cloves, but no more. To make this soup edible I added fresh chopped cilantro and 2 tsp more salt and garnished with sour cream. Since I dont have a crockpot big enough to make this I pressure cooked the beans and otherwise followed the directions. I did not add black pepper or jalapeno because I dont like black pepper and my children wont eat spicy food.

  • As written this was really bland and tasteless. I added a tablespoon of chili powder and that made it absolutely delicious

Decadent Seafood Chowder Reviews

  • This was my first time ever making chowder it was exactly like eating at a restaurant. It tasted just like I imagined it would. I changed the fish to half a pound of lobster, three quarter pound of haddock, three quarter pound of scallops, and a pound of shrimp to make it morw chunky. it was a hit as an appetizer in a three course meal for my family.

  • I made the chowder with some minor changes. 1. I omitted the saffron (couldnt find it at my local store)2. I used tilapia instead of halibut3. I added some imitation lobster meat I had in my freezer4. I added extra Half-N-Half ( texture was very thick)Otherwise, I followed the recipe as listed, and it was delicious Ive never made homemade chowder before, but thought It compared better than many chowders I have ordered in a restaurant Great recipe

  • This is the best chowder we have ever had. I added some fresh salmon cut in chunks and a half cup of corn kernels from fresh corn that we had the night before. I cut the garlic to two tablespoons and added two cups of two percent milk to the half and half. I had no saffron. I used two cups of cooked lobster from our feast a few days ago (I had frozen it)A decadent meal served with garlic toast and salad. I will definitely make this again (if affordable)

  • Pretty good. I used salmon, shrimp, scallops and lump crab meat which made it pretty expensive. Also added the Louisiana touch with some cayenne pepper and Old Bay seasoning. I will make it again. Husband loved it

  • Loved this recipe Tweaked it a little bit, as to what I had on hand. But I will certainly be making this again in the future. Its going to be great to freeze the leftover portions too

Trump election probe in Georgia to seat special grand jury

Trump election probe inside Georgia to seat exceptional magnificent jury

ATLANTA (AP) — When potential magnificent jurors show up at an Atlanta courthouse Monday, they'll find a television camera inside the space with every one other accompanied by streets closed external outside — nods to the great condition attentiveness inside the investigation into whether former President Donald Trump with every one other accompanied by others illegally tried to pressure Georgia officials to overturn Joe Biden's presidential election victory inside the state.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has taken the uncommon step of requesting a exceptional magnificent jury for the investigation, with every one other accompanied by the selection of that panel begins Monday.

The seating of a magnificent jury — flat a infrequent exceptional magnificent jury — is a procedure procedure that's normally of little attentiveness to the public. But the appetite for some report concerning this instance has prompted the court of rules and regulations to build accommodations for at least parts of the magnificent jury selection to exist transmit to the public. Although there will exist cameras inside the room, they won't exist allowed to show potential magnificent jurors.

The investigation into potential attempts to effect the 2020 general election inside Georgia began early last year. Willis asked the leader judge of the county higher-ranking court of rules and regulations inside January to impanel a exceptional magnificent jury. She wrote inside a letter that her office had details indicating a "reasonable probability" of "possible criminal disruptions" to the management of that election.

The leader judge's order says the exceptional magnificent jury is to exist seated for a time of up to a year, beginning Monday. Unlike a uniform magnificent jury, which hears numerous different cases with every one other accompanied by tin matter indictments, a exceptional magnificent jury focuses on investigating a single subject with every one other accompanied by produces a report on its findings. The neighbourhood attorney at that hour dated decides whether to seek an indictment from a uniform magnificent jury.

Former Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter, who convened a exceptional magnificent jury violently 15 years ago, said the procedure for seating a exceptional magnificent jury is attractive a a large amount of the same while seating a uniform magnificent jury. It's made up of in the centre of 16 with every one other accompanied by 23 people who are summoned from the county lord jury list.

The judge will build sure the potential magnificent jurors are certified — over 18, residents of Fulton County with every one other accompanied by haven't been convicted of a felony — with every one other accompanied by at that hour dated will hear from people who want to exist excused for one source or another.

Unlike jury selection for a trial, where there are set of two sets of lawyers trying to ferret not here biases with every one other accompanied by prejudices, there's no indeed protection attorney inside this procedure since no indeed one has been charged yet. Anyone who tunes inside to watch shouldn't expect to hear potential magnificent jurors questioned extensively concerning their political leanings or their opinions on Trump.

"There's no indeed excuses for bias or prejudice," Porter said. "In this case, I would have a suspicion if important human being came inside wearing a MAGA hat, they would inside all likelihood forgive them. But the question into their prejudices or biases is very, extremely restricted inside selecting a magnificent jury."

Once the exceptional magnificent jury is seated, the cameras will have to depart from — all magnificent jury proceedings are secret. But Willis indicated inside her letter to the leader judge that one source she wanted a exceptional magnificent jury is to matter subpoenas to witnesses who have refused to cooperate lacking one.

Willis has confirmed that her team is looking into a January 2021 phone call inside which Trump pushed Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" the votes needed for him to come first in the state. She has too said they're looking at a November 2020 phone call in the centre of U.S. Sen. New gasoline pipeline boosts Europe's provide to ease Russian supply

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Mountainous with every one other accompanied by remote, the Greek-Bulgaria border on one occasion formed the southern curve of the Iron Curtain. Today, it's where the European Union is redrawing the region's vitality scheme to ease its heavy reliance on Russian natural gas.

A new pipeline — built throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, tested with every one other accompanied by due to start commercial operation inside June — will build sure that large volumes of gasoline will run in the centre of the set of two countries inside both directions to cause electricity, fuel manufacturing with every one other accompanied by hotness homes.

The vitality link takes on greater importance following Moscow's decision this week to gash off natural gasoline supplies to Poland with every one other accompanied by Bulgaria over a request for ruble payments stemming from Western sanctions over the war of Ukraine.

The 180-kilometer (110-mile) scheme is the earliest of some planned gasoline interconnectors that will permit eastern European Union members with every one other accompanied by countries hoping to fasten the 27-nation bloc access to the worldwide gasoline market.

In the short term, it's Bulgaria's backup.

The pipeline link will present with the country access to ports inside neighboring Greece that are importing liquefied natural gas, or LNG, with every one other accompanied by too will convey gasoline from Azerbaijan into and not here of a new pipeline system that ends inside Italy.

It's one of numerous efforts while subscriber states scramble to edit their vitality mix, accompanied by some reverting spine to emissions-heavy coal while too preparation expanded output from renewables. Germany, the world's biggest purchaser of Russian energy, is looking to build LNG buy from overseas terminals that would lay clasp of years, with every one other accompanied by Italy, another top Russian gasoline importer, has reached deals accompanied by Algeria, Azerbaijan, Angola with every one other accompanied by Congo for gasoline supplies.

The European Union wants ax its dependence on Russian lubricant with every one other accompanied by gasoline by two-thirds this year with every one other accompanied by completely over five years into and not here of different sources, wind with every one other accompanied by solar, with every one other accompanied by conservation.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is probable to accelerate changes inside the EU's long-term strategy, adapting to vitality that is additional costly nevertheless too additional integrated among subscriber states, said Simone Tagliapietra, an vitality expert with every one other accompanied by research fellow at the Brussels-based believe tank Bruegel.

"It's a new world," he said. "And inside this new world, it's understandable that Russia doesn't want to exist small portion of an international order while we believe of it."

Tagliapietra added: "The master scheme — mainly by Germany — over the last 50 years was always one of engaging accompanied by Russia on energy. ... But specified what we are seeing inside Ukraine with every one other accompanied by specified Russia's view of international relations, it's not the sort of country accompanied by which we would exist fond of to do business."

EU policymakers argue that while Eastern European members are some of the most dependent on Russian gas, the dimensions of their markets makes the difficulty manageable. Bulgaria imported 90% of its gasoline from Russia nevertheless only consumes 3 billion cubic meters every one year — thirty times less than lead purchaser Germany, according to 2020 facts from Eurostat, the EU statistics agency.

Officially called the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria, the new pipeline will complement the existing European network. Much of that dates to the Soviet era, transporting gasoline from vast vitality fields inside Russia westward, when Moscow sought poorly needed funds for its faltering command affluence with every one other accompanied by Western suppliers to assist build its pipelines.

The link will sprint in the centre of the northeastern Greek city of Komotini with every one other accompanied by Stara Zagora, inside centre Bulgaria, with every one other accompanied by will present with the country with every one other accompanied by neighbors accompanied by new grid connections access to the expanding worldwide gasoline market. That includes a link accompanied by the newly built Trans Adriatic Pipeline carrying gasoline from Azerbaijan while well while suppliers of liquefied natural gasoline that arrives by ship, probable to include Qatar, Algeria with every one other accompanied by the United States.

As numerous while eight additional interconnectors could exist built inside eastern Europe, reaching while a lengthy way while Ukraine with every one other accompanied by Austria.

The 240 million euro ($250 million) pipeline will convey 3 billion cubic meters of gasoline per year, accompanied by an option to exist expanded to 5 billion. It received funding from Bulgaria, Greece with every one other accompanied by the EU with every one other accompanied by has strong political support from Brussels with every one other accompanied by the United States.

On the ground, the scheme faced multiple holdups since of present with chain snags throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Receiving specialized parts with every one other accompanied by moving personnel following building got underway inside early 2020 in a short time became increasingly difficult, said Antonis Mitzalis, administrative director of the Greek contractor AVAX that oversaw the project.

Construction finished inside early April, he said, while labour with every one other accompanied by difficult at set of two metering stations with every one other accompanied by software installation are inside the final stages.

"We had a succession inside mind. But the fact that some materials did not come made us rework that sequence, occasionally accompanied by a cost effect," Mitzalis said.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis missed a tour of the location last month following contracting COVID-19. He spoke Wednesday accompanied by his Bulgarian counterpart, Kiril Petkov, to provide assurances of Greek support.

"Bulgaria with every one other accompanied by Greece will carry on accompanied by to labour with every one other for vitality safety with every one other accompanied by diversification — of planned importance for both countries with every one other accompanied by the region," Petkov subsequent tweeted. An Oval Office visit and a Moscow trip: Inside the Reed deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — The worst possible moment for bringing Trevor Reed home turned out to be the best.

With U.S.-Russian relations at their lowest point in decades, it seemed an improbable time to hope for the release of Reed, a former Marine detained in Russia for almost three years. Yet this week the Biden administration completed the type of transaction it had earlier seemed resistant to, exchanging Reed for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot and convicted drug trafficker serving a 20-year prison sentence in Connecticut.

A series of events and considerations in the last two months helped facilitate the swap, including escalating concerns over Reed's health, a private Oval Office meeting between his parents and President Joe Biden and a secretive Moscow trip by a former diplomat on the cusp of Russia's war with Ukraine.

"All those three forced the White House to make a decision that they hadn't made before," said Mickey Bergman, vice president at the Richardson Center for Global Engagement.

How the war — and the breakdown in U.S.-Russian relations — affected the deal isn't clear. U.S. officials stressed that the negotiations for Reed's release were narrow in scope, focused squarely on the prisoners and not on Russia's war and not reflective of any broader diplomatic engagement. But while the timing of the deal was startling, it's also clear that the groundwork for it had been laid before the conflict had begun

After a rocket: 'One second and you are left with nothing'

Biden seeks $33B for Ukraine, signaling long-term commitment

"I did it," Biden told reporters Wednesday about the deal. "I raised it. I raised it three months ago."

Just as the war was about to commence, Bergman and his colleague, Bill Richardson, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and ex-New Mexico governor, flew to Moscow on the plane of FedEx chief executive Fred Smith for a meeting with Russian government officials. It was a continuation of negotiations they'd been having for the release of Reed and another jailed American, corporate security executive Paul Whelan.

They left with the contours in place for the one-for-one swap that ultimately took place.

In Texas, Joey and Paula Reed were worrying that Russia's war with Ukraine, and resulting tensions with the U.S., could close off communication channels and prevent any common ground for negotiations. During meetings with administration officials in the last year — including with the Justice Department, which prosecuted Yaroshenko — the couple expressed support for a swap but say they weren't led to think that was a viable option.

"They didn't say: 'Oh, we agree with you, that's a great deal. That's a good point,'" Paula Reed said in a March interview with The Associated Press. "They didn't say anything like that. They just said: 'We hear you. Thank you very much.'"

But weeks into the war, the couple did something that got the White House's attention.

As Biden traveled to Texas to support veterans, the Reeds stood along the motorcade route in hopes of getting meaningful face-time with the president. That didn't happen, though he did speak by phone with the couple. Later that month, they arrived in Washington and stood with signs near the White House, hoping again to meet with the president.

This time, they were invited into the Oval Office for a sit-down with Biden and other administration officials. The White House issued a statement that night reiterating its commitment to getting Reed and Whelan home, an issue that senior officials had raised in private meetings with Russian leaders.

The meeting was a rare bit of presidential access for the family of an American detainee, especially since Biden himself has been less public than his predecessor, Donald Trump, about efforts to get Americans home.

Hovering in the background as well was Reed's health. In March, Reed told his parents that he'd been coughing up blood several times a day, had pain in his lung and a broken rib. Last year, he contracted COVID-19. Even on Wednesday, his parents were taken aback by how thin their son looked during video footage of the transfer. They said they expected that he'd need medical care before resuming his daily life in Texas.

Those health issues also alarmed U.S. officials.

"That, I think, contributed to really ratcheting up the conversations on this issue, getting to a point where we were able to make this arrangement, getting to a point where we were able to turn to some of the logistics of simply getting it done," a senior administration official told reporters in a background briefing this week.

Separately, a lawyer for Yaroshenko has said his client also suffered from multiple health problems, and tried unsuccessfully in 2020 to have him freed early from his 20-year prison sentence on compassionate release grounds because of the pandemic.

Left out of any deal were Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence on espionage-related charges that his family says are fabricated, and Brittney Griner, a WNBA star detained in February after Russian authorities said a search of her bag revealed a cannabis derivative.

The Whelan family said in a statement that it was happy about Reed's release but troubled that their loved one wasn't part of it.

"Paul has already spent 3 and a quarter years as a Russian hostage," the statement said. "Is President Biden's failure to bring Paul home an admission that some cases are too hard to solve? Is the Administration's piecemeal approach picking low-hanging fruit?"

Richardson, who has helped facilitate multiple releases of American detainees and hostages in recent years, said the Biden team deserves recognition for authorizing this particular swap at a time when U.S.-Russia relations were so low.

"It doesn't matter who gets credit," Richardson said, "as long as hostages like Trevor Reed are home."

Drop in US GDP challenges Biden's pitch to voters

Drop in US GDP challenges Biden's pitch to voters

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden's upbeat message that the economy is cruising along hit a troublesome speed bump on Thursday when the federal government reported that U.S. gross domestic product shrank during the first three months of 2022.

Economic activity declined at annual rate of 1.4%, a sharp reversal from last year when growth was the strongest since 1984. There were technical reasons for the decline that likely obscured the actual health of the economy, yet the drop clearly put the president on the defensive after he has said repeatedly that the booming job market means the U.S. can withstand inflation at a 40-year high.

Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package was supposed to propel the economy to new heights that Democrats could then sell to voters in this year's midterm elections. But the muddled data has weakened the clarity of Biden's pitch and emboldened Republican criticism.

The president told reporters at the White House that the consumer spending and business investment portions of the GDP report were solid, evidence that growth should resume in the months to come. The biggest drag on GDP was an increase in imports, but a one-off glitch — a sharp drop in business inventories — was a key contributor to the overall drop. The inventory decline reflected the aftershocks of the pandemic, rather than the underlying health of the economy, the president said.

Biden seeks $33B for Ukraine, signaling long-term commitment

"What you're seeing is enormous growth in the country that was affected by everything from COVID and the COVID blockages that occurred along the way," Biden said.

While the president maintained that there would not be a recession this year, he conceded that it was a concern.

"You're always worried about a recession," he said.

To Republican lawmakers and some economists, the drop in GDP hinted at the risk posed by surging inflation. Consumers have grown skittish despite increases in their net worth. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has created the risk of oil, natural gas and food shortages. Pandemic-related lockdowns in China indicate that supplies chains troubles will persist.

Following last year's coronavirus relief package, the government is now trying to calm the economy. There is less fiscal support as the federal deficit will likely be lower this year. At the same time, the Federal Reserve is trying to raise benchmark interest rates to reduce inflation without causing a downturn.

But Thursday's report gave Republican lawmakers a direct line of attack.

"Under President Biden's leadership, our economy is actually shrinking," Texas Rep. Kevin Brady said at the start of a House Ways & Means Committee hearing on Thursday. "The president has missed four of the five quarterly economic projections. So Americans ought to brace for slower job growth and higher prices ahead."

What the GDP report actually reveals about the months ahead may be more complicated. Some economists see the consumer spending and business investment as signs of a quick rebound, while others fear that consumer spending could weaken because of high prices and the efforts to reduce inflation.

"Underlying demand remains strong, and the labor market is in excellent shape," said Gus Faucher, chief economist of PNC Financial Services. "Growth will resume in the second quarter."

But Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at the consultancy RSM, said that the strengths observed by others could fade as policymakers tackle inflation because sustained economic growth depends on having stable prices.

"The price of oil and gasoline and food are all increasing faster than your paycheck," Brusuelas said. "Therefore, we need to slow down the economy and demand with it, and that likely means slower growth and a slightly higher level of unemployment over the next two years. And it will be done with intent and purposefully. The problem is we could cause a recession in the process."

One senior White House official said the various disruptions of the past two years have hurt the reliability of traditional economic indicators, masking what the administration sees as a solid economy.

The official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the GDP report, said the key to overcoming this challenge will be to get the American people to focus on the bigger picture instead of monthly and quarterly reports.

On Thursday afternoon, Biden tried to pull attention back to that bigger picture by inviting small business owners to the White House. He noted that Americans have emerged from the pandemic as more entrepreneurial with 5.4 million applying last year to start new businesses. That's 20% higher than any other year on record.

"We have every indication that this trend is going to continue," Biden said, putting the morning's GDP report behind him. "The reason for that is because we're giving people financial security to take a risk and pursue their small business dreams."

Israel PM's family receives death threat and bullet in mail

Israel PM's family receives death threat and bullet in mail

JERUSALEM (AP) — The family of Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has received a death threat and bullet in the mail for the second time this week, the police said Thursday.

According to an Israeli official familiar with the matter, the target of the threats was Bennett's 17-year-old son. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Officials have not said who might be behind the threats.

Bennett, who leads a small nationalist party, has come under heavy criticism from Israeli hard-liners who accuse him of abandoning his ideology. In 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish ultranationalist opposed to his peacemaking attempts with the Palestinians.

Also, tensions have been heightened with the Palestinians recently following a series of deadly Palestinian attacks in Israeli cities, Israeli military raids in the occupied West Bank and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site.

In a nationwide speech marking Israel's Holocaust memorial day, Bennett lamented the deep polarization in Israeli society as he warned his citizens against letting internal divisions tear society apart.

"My brothers and sisters, we cannot, we simply cannot allow the same dangerous gene of factionalism dismantle Israel from within," Bennett said in Wednesday night's ceremony, broadcast on national TV.

Bennett's speech, coming on one of Israel's most solemn days of the year, came in a deeply personal context. On Tuesday, his family received the first letter with a live bullet and a death threat. Israeli authorities tightened security around the premier and his family and were investigating.

That prompted his son oldest son Yoni to write on Instagram how upsetting the episode had been.

"It's just sad to see that real people write such horrible things," he said. "To think that he lives and breathes like me but has a brain that was created by the devil is crazy."

Israeli media said Yoni, who is 17, was the target of Thursday's threats.

Police have said they are investigating both incidents. They have placed a gag order on the investigations and released few details.

Bennett leads a narrow coalition that recently lost its parliamentary majority. His government is made up of eight parties that have little in common beyond their shared animosity to former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Netanyahu, now the opposition leader, has worked hard to deepen divisions within the coalition.

Bennett's government was formed after four inconclusive elections, underscoring the fissures in society over key issues, including the conflict with the Palestinians and relations between religious and secular Jews.

European leaders blast cutoff of Russian gas as 'blackmail'

European leaders blast cutoff of Russian gas as 'blackmail'

POKROVSK, Ukraine (AP) — European leaders blasted Russia's decision to cut natural gas shipments to Poland and Bulgaria as "blackmail," saying the cutoff and the Kremlin's warning that it might cease shipments to other countries is a failed attempt to divide the West over its support for Ukraine.

Russia's move Wednesday to use its most essential export as leverage marked a dramatic escalation in the economic war of sanctions and countersanctions that has unfolded in parallel to the fighting on the battlefield.

The tactic against the two EU and NATO members could eventually force targeted nations to ration gas and deal another blow to economies suffering from rising prices. At the same time, it could deprive Russia of badly needed income to fund its war effort.

Poland has been a major gateway for the delivery of weapons to Ukraine and confirmed this week that it is sending the country tanks. Just hours before Russia's state energy giant Gazprom acted, Poland announced a new set of sanctions against the company and other Russian businesses and oligarchs.

Bulgaria, under a new liberal government that took office last fall, has cut many of its old ties to Moscow and likewise supported punitive measures against the Kremlin. It has also hosted Western fighter jets at a new NATO outpost on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.

The gas cuts do not immediately put the two countries in any dire trouble. Poland, especially, has been working for many years to line up other suppliers, and the continent is heading into summer, making gas less essential for households.

Also, Russian gas deliveries to both Poland and Bulgaria were expected to end later this year anyway.

Still, the cutoff and the Kremlin warning that other countries could be next sent shivers of worry through the 27-nation European Union. Germany, the largest economy on the continent, and Italy are among Europe's biggest consumers of Russian natural gas, though they, too, have been taking steps to reduce their dependence on Moscow.

"It comes as no surprise that the Kremlin uses fossil fuels to try to blackmail us," said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "Today, the Kremlin failed once again in his attempt to sow division amongst member states. The era of Russian fossil fuel in Europe is coming to an end."

Gazprom said it shut off the two countries because they refused to pay in rubles, as President Vladimir Putin has demanded of "unfriendly" nations. The Kremlin said other countries may be cut off if they don't agree to the payment arrangement.

Most European countries have publicly balked at Russia's demand for rubles, but it is not clear how many have actually faced the moment of decision so far. Greece's next scheduled payment to Gazprom is due on May 25, for example, and the government must decide then whether to comply.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told his country's parliament that he believes Poland's support for Ukraine — and the new sanctions imposed by Warsaw on Tuesday — were the real reasons behind the gas cutoff.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov called the suspension blackmail, adding: "We will not succumb to such a racket."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia views gas as a weapon for political blackmail and "sees a united Europe as a target."

On the battlefield, fighting continued in the country's east along a largely static front line some 300 miles (480 kilometers) long.

Russia claimed its missiles hit a batch of weapons that the U.S. and European nations had delivered to Ukraine. One person was killed and at least two were injured when rockets hit a residential neighborhood in Kharkiv.

Western officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence findings, said Russia has made slow progress in the eastern Donbas region, with "minor gains," including the capture of villages and small towns south of Izyum and on the outskirts of Rubizhne.

Serhiy Haidai, the governor of the Luhansk region, conceded that Russia has made some progress in its advance on Rubizhne through its nearly constant bombardment, but that Ukrainian troops are fighting back and retreating only when there is nothing left to defend.

"There is no point in staying on territory that has been fired on so often that every meter is well known," he said.

Maxim, a Ukrainian tank commander in the Donbas who didn't give his last name, offered his rationale for why Ukrainian forces have been able to hold back the better-equipped Russian army: "The strength is not in the tank; the strength is in the people."

The Western officials said some Russian troops have been shifted from the gutted southern port city of Mariupol to other parts of the Donbas. But some remain in Mariupol to fight Ukrainian forces holed up at the Azovstal steel plant, the last stronghold in the city. About 1,000 civilians were said to be taking shelter there with an estimated 2,000 Ukrainian defenders.

"The situation is very difficult. There are huge problems with water, food," Serhii Volynskyi, commander of the marine unit inside the plant, said in a Facebook video message. He said hundreds of fighters and civilians were wounded and in need of medical help, and those inside included children, older people and disabled people.

In the Black Sea port city of Kherson, which Russian forces have occupied since early in the war, a series of explosions boomed late Wednesday near the television tower and at least temporarily knocked Russian channels off the air, Ukrainian and Russian news organizations reported.

Just across the border from the Donbas in Russia, an ammunition depot in the Belgorod region burned after several explosions were heard, the governor said. Blasts were also reported in Russia's Kursk region near the border, and authorities in Russia's Voronezh region said an air defense system shot down a drone.

Earlier this week, an oil storage facility in the Russian city of Bryansk was engulfed by fire.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak hinted at the country's involvement in the fires, saying in a Telegram post that "karma (is) a harsh thing."

With the help of Western arms, Ukrainian forces managed to thwart Russian forces' attempt to storm Kyiv. Moscow now says its focus is the capture of the Donbas, Ukraine's mostly Russian-speaking industrial heartland.

A defiant Putin vowed Russia will achieve its military goals, telling parliament, "All the tasks of the special military operation we are conducting in the Donbas and Ukraine, launched on Feb. 24, will be unconditionally fulfilled."

Once dead, twice billed: GAO questions COVID funeral awards

Once dead, twice billed: GAO questions COVID funeral awards

The Federal Emergency Management Agency may have been double-billed for the funerals of hundreds of people who died of COVID-19, the Government Accountability Office said in a new report Wednesday.

The GAO identified 374 people who died and were listed on more than one application that received an award from the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance fund. That amounts to about $4.8 million in assistance that could have been improper or potentially fraudulent payments, the report said.

FEMA spokesperson Jaclyn Rothenberg said Wednesday that this was not an example of large-scale fraud and the amount of funeral assistance identified as at-risk was relatively small, with FEMA's "multi-layered internal quality controls and fraud controls" resulting in improper payments of less than 1%.

"Unfortunately, fraud, particularly identity theft, is common. FEMA has controls in place to detect instances and can and will prosecute anyone who would apply for assistance fraudulently," Rothenberg said in a statement.

FEMA told the GAO that some duplicative applications were incorrectly awarded funeral assistance due to processing errors, not fraud, and benefits were not actually paid twice in some of the cases, the report said.

The cases have been sent to the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General to consider whether to launch any fraud investigations, said Chris Currie, who leads GAO's work on emergency management and disaster response and recovery, and Rebecca Shea, who oversees GAO audits to identify fraud, waste and abuse.

Shea said they could not confirm whether FEMA did or did not pay twice in all of the cases. She said she thinks fraudsters likely targeted the fund and some of it is data entry mistakes.

"Given everything we've seen in the pandemic programs over the past two years, if fraudsters did not try to gain from this system, that would be surprising to me," she said Wednesday.

As of late last year, FEMA had awarded about $1.5 billion in assistance in response to about 235,000 applications for nearly 237,000 people who died due to COVID-19, the report said. While the duplicates are less than .2% of the applications, the GAO said the findings are significant due to the possibility of improper payments and potential fraud in this disaster and future disasters.

There were only about 6,000 applications for funeral assistance after other disasters in the decade before the pandemic. Use of the program "exploded" since Congress expanded it for COVID-19 by making the $50 billion in the Disaster Relief Fund available for such assistance, prompting GAO to do a forensic audit, Currie said.

Most of the 374 deceased individuals identified on more than one application were listed by different applicants, the GAO said. The GAO provided three examples to FEMA. FEMA said there were processing errors and started trying to recoup the money in two of the cases in January, the report said.

About 50 deceased individuals were listed on multiple applications from the same applicant, the report said. FEMA initially said there were duplicates in the system due to a change in geographic coding and only one of the applications was paid in each case, but when the GAO provided examples, FEMA confirmed the duplicative applications were paid, the report said.

In addition, the GAO said it identified another 400 applications that received more than the maximum benefit of $9,000 for each person who died — some up to nearly $20,000 — for another roughly $4.7 million in assistance that could've been improper or potentially fraudulent payments.

There were thousands of awards given in instances where there was a missing or invalid death date according to the data that FEMA provided, the GAO said. Sometimes a deceased person was listed as the applicant or the date listed for the decedent was before the pandemic started, raising questions about how FEMA determined eligibility in those cases, Shea said.

"That shouldn't be happening," she said. "You know, dead can't apply for benefits."

The GAO is recommending FEMA put additional controls in place to prevent and detect improper payments and potential fraud, and address deficiencies in the data by updating records as data is verified and adding data fields where necessary.

Rothenberg said FEMA established additional controls prior to implementing COVID-19 Funeral Assistance to mitigate the risk of fraud and identity theft. She said FEMA requires verifiable documentation for funeral expenses, including funeral home contracts and receipts, and conducts multiple verification checks.

Musk's Twitter ambitions to collide accompanied by Europe's tech rules

LONDON (AP) — A hands-off approach to moderating contented at Elon Musk's Twitter could clash accompanied by ambitious new laws inside Europe meant to retain protected from danger users from disinformation, hate speech with every one other accompanied by other harmful material.

Musk, who describes himself while a "free speech absolutist," pledged to buy Twitter for $44 billion this week, accompanied by European Union officials with every one other accompanied by digital campaigners fast to speak that some focus on without charge speech to the detriment of online safety would not travel through the air following the 27-nation bloc solidified its status while a worldwide leader inside the attempt to rein inside the ability of tech giants.

"If his approach will exist 'just place an extremity to moderating it,' he will probable find himself inside a a large amount of legal problems inside the EU," said Jan Penfrat, older policy counsellor at digital rights category EDRi.

Musk will in a short time exist confronted accompanied by Europe's Digital Services Act, which will need large tech companies exist fond of Twitter, Google with every one other accompanied by Facebook parent Meta to police their platforms additional strictly or face billions inside fines.

Officials agreed fair days ago on the landmark legislation, expected to lay clasp of effect by 2024. It's unclear how in a short time it could spark a similar crackdown elsewhere, accompanied by U.S. lawmakers divided on efforts to address competition, online privacy, disinformation with every one other accompanied by more.

That means the position of employment of reining inside a Musk-led Twitter could let fall to Europe — something officials signaled they're prepared for.

"Be it cars or communal media, some firm operating inside Europe needs to comply accompanied by our rules — anyway of their shareholding," Thierry Breton, the EU's inner market commissioner, tweeted Tuesday. "Mr Musk knows this well. He is familiar accompanied by European rules on automotive, with every one other accompanied by will fast adapt to the Digital Services Act."

Musk's plans for Twitter haven't been fleshed not here on the far side of a few ideas for new features, opening its algorithm to condition inspection with every one other accompanied by defeating "bots" posing while real users.

France's digital minister, Cedric O, said Musk has "interesting things" that he wants to push for Twitter, "but let's remember that #DigitalServicesAct — with every one other accompanied by therefore the duty to fight misinformation, online hate, etc. — will apply anyway of the ideology of its owner."

EU Green Party lawmaker Alexandra Geese, who was associated accompanied by inside negotiating the law, said, "Elon Musk's idea of without charge speech lacking contented moderation would exclude large parts of the inhabitants from condition discourse," such while women with every one other accompanied by people of color.

Twitter declined to comment. Musk tweeted that "the extreme antibody response from those who terror without charge speech says it all." He added that by without charge speech, he means "that which matches the law" with every one other accompanied by that he's opposed to censorship going "far on the far side of the law."

The United Kingdom too has an online safety rules and regulations inside the works that threatens older managers at tech companies accompanied by prison if they don't comply. Users would obtain additional ability to chunk anonymous trolls, with every one other accompanied by tech companies would exist forced to proactively lay clasp of down unlawful content.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's office stressed the need for Twitter to carry on accompanied by to exist "responsible" with every one other accompanied by retain protected from danger users.

"Regardless of ownership, all communal media platforms must exist responsible," Johnson's spokesperson Max Blain said Tuesday.

Damian Collins, a British lawmaker who led a parliamentary committee employed on the bill, said that if Musk really wants to build Twitter a without charge speech haven, "he will need to clean up the digital town square."

Collins said Twitter has become a place where users are drowned not here by coordinated armies of "bot" accounts spreading disinformation with every one other accompanied by dividing with every one other accompanied by that users refrain from expressing themselves "because of the hate with every one other accompanied by abuse they will receive."

The laws inside the U.K. with every one other accompanied by EU mark such abuse. Under the EU's Digital Services Act, tech companies must place inside place systems so unlawful contented tin exist easily flagged for swift removal.

Experts said Twitter will have to go on the far side of taking down clearly defined unlawful contented exist fond of hate speech, terrorism with every one other accompanied by child reproductive abuse with every one other accompanied by grapple accompanied by material that falls into a gray zone.

The rules and regulations includes requirements for large tech platforms to convey not here yearly chance assessments to determine how a a large amount of their products with every one other accompanied by design choices give to the spread of divisive material that tin affect issues exist fond of health or condition debate.

"This is all concerning assessing to what area your users are seeing, for example, Russian propaganda inside the circumstances of the Ukraine war," online harassment or COVID-19 misinformation, said Mathias Vermeulen, condition policy director at facts rights agency AWO.

Violations would incur fines of up to 6% of a company's worldwide yearly revenue. Repeat offenders tin exist banned from the EU.

The Digital Services Act too requires tech companies to exist additional transparent by giving regulators with every one other accompanied by researchers access to facts on how their systems advocate contented to users.

Musk has similar thoughts, saying his plans include "making the algorithms not shut spring to grow trust."

Penfrat said it's a great idea that could pave the way to a new ecosystem of ranking with every one other accompanied by recommendation options.

But he panned another Musk idea — "authenticating all humans" — saying that taking away anonymity or pseudonyms from people, including society's most marginalized, was the fantasy of every one autocrat.

And they're too additional probable to be in touch worried concerning actuality intelligent to remain inside their communities, obtain protected from danger keeping from medical providers with every one other accompanied by receive backup from family members or near friends, the poll found.

Part of it may exist due to terror of the unknown among people who've relied on a paycheck all their lives.

"When you've never done it before, with every one other accompanied by you are only going to do it once, you're type of flying by the seat of your pants," said Leigh Gerstenberger, inside his late 60s with every one other accompanied by former from a career inside monetary services. Older friends are by that hour dated collecting Social Security.

"In my group, you awe if it's going to exist available," Wiggins said of management programs that support older people. "Maybe it's not. You will find people who are less apt to have a orthodox pension. Those are things that depart from you accompanied by a a large amount of trepidation in the direction of the future."

Some people now inside their 50s with every one other accompanied by early 60s may still exist dealing accompanied by the overhang of the 2007-09 recession, when unemployment peaked at 10% with every one other accompanied by foreclosures soared, said Sarah Szanton, dean of the Johns Hopkins University nursing school. As it stands now, a greatest medical matter tin involve a automobile trip of up to an hour to the hospital.

A real possessions agent inside her early 50s, Pattishall shares the goal of aging at home, nevertheless her trust flat is not extremely high. "I believe it would fair eat away what savings I have," she said.

It's all concerning adjusting, says another small-town resident, concerning 20 years older than Pattishall. Shirley Hayden lives inside Texas, near the Louisiana border with every one other accompanied by on the track of hurricanes from the Gulf of Mexico. She says she has no indeed investments with every one other accompanied by only self-effacing savings, nevertheless she rates herself while extremely prepared to carry on accompanied by aging inside place.

"You have to learn to exist within your means," Hayden said. "I don't ask in remittance things I can't pay for to pay for.

"My biggest thing I have to labour around while a lengthy way while expenses is insurance," she added. "I don't really need some new clothes. In Texas, you exist inside jeans with every one other accompanied by T-shirts with every one other accompanied by they don't go not here of style. Yeah, your shoes exist dressed inside out, nevertheless how regularly do you buy a set of two of shoes?"

Not so uncomplicated to labour around is the well-documented ethnic affluence gap that constrains older Black people inside particular. A Federal Reserve report notes that on signify Black with every one other accompanied by Latino households own 15% to 20% while a a large amount of netting affluence while white households.
