Clay's Grilled Beer Can Chicken Reviews

  • Always remember when making beer chicken to place a small wad of foil or small red potato over neck so that the chicken steams & stays moist inside. Im not a beer fan. I put 8 oz. of ckn broth in empty 16 oz beer can with spices of choice. The taller can is a little more sturdy. Less chance of tipping over

  • Great rub. My new go to for chicken, pork and ribs . The chicken was outstanding , I added an onion in the chicken neck.

  • Wonderful Brined the chicken first overnight in fridge. I took your rub recipe and mixed with 1 and 1/2 sticks of room temp. real butter. Let that sit to instill seasonings. Put this mixture in between skin and chicken breast and then covered all of chicken.Put lemon and onion in chicken cavity. Also put hickory chips on in to smoke as it grilled. Used indirect grilling method. Put foil pan under chicken below grate to catch melted butter so it wont flame. Make sure lid is on to control temp. Flavorful and juicy

  • Very good rub I opened the beer and pored out about an ounce. I personally set the grill to high for the first 10-15 mins to ensure crispy skin. Then I turned down to 350 until it hits 160 degrees. It came out tender and delicious The smoky paprika with the tinge of heat and sweet is great Remember to rest for 5 mins to redistribute the juices and your bird will come up to 165 degrees. Perfect

  • Dont cook it on medium, we TORCHED it...was the mistake putting the lid down? We googled how to do it because this recipe didnt clarify and all of them said to put the lid down. It was charcoal Wish we could have enjoyed it :-(

  • This is our Go-To recipe for beer can chicken Turns out great every time. I put a pie pan under the chicken while it is on the BBQ to catch drippings and prevent over browning.

  • I made this last night and it was so moist and delicious I will make this again Thank you for the great recipe :-)

  • Made this again last night -- fantastic as always I cleaned and rubbed the bird in the morning (only used about 1/2 of the rub), then put it in the fridge for 4-5 hours. When I lit the grill (set for med-high heat), I put the chicken on the can/stand (treated with cooking spray). I applied leftover rub to any bare spots on the chicken, and stuck a wad of foil in the neck cavity. After preheating for 10-15 minutes, I put the chicken on the grill and left it on med-high (about 400-425F) for 5 minutes to crisp the skin, then turned down to medium-low (about 300-325F) Took about 1-1/2 hours to cook this 5-lb bird to perfection. Leftover meat makes the best chicken salad evah

  • We have never had beer can grilled chicken. This was for sure the best grilled chicken ever. moist lots of flavor. put corn on the cob and other veggies on the girl just b4 the chicken was done and it was the best meal. easy and so wonderful-this will b the only way we grill chicken from now on-thank u

  • Fantastic

  • Good, but I found it difficult to get chrispy skin.

  • This is really good Crispy and tender

  • This is the BEST beer can chicken Ive ever tasted. Cooked it just like the recipe suggests. It was marvelous. Melt in your mouth tender. Just right spicy. TSH

  • I followed the recipe for the rub, but left out the cayenne since my family has a low heat tolerance. I rubbed the chicken down, covered it, and let it sit in the fridge while I was at work. Since Im a novice homebrewer, and had a batch of Sunset Pale Ale ready, I used it as the beer, and shoved an onion in the neck. I placed it on a half cooking sheet, set it on the preheated grill, and cooked it for an hour and a half at 350 and it came out perfect. The skin was crispy, and the meat was moist and flavorful. Id skip the microbrew next time though. I dont think the flavor of the beer added anything. Next time, like a previous reviewer suggested, Ill put a twig of rosemary in a light beer like Bud or Coors.

  • Excellent and juicy Put a potato in the neck as previous reviews mentioned

  • This recipe has made many people smile since I first started making it last summer.Excellent rub blend and you wont find a way to get a more moist bird. The only change I ever make is to add a sprig of fresh rosemary to the beer can when I have some. But the recipe is delicious as written.

  • Delicious

  • Wow This chicken is amazing I made it two days ago and it was so simple The rub is OUTSTANDING and agree with others who have rated this recipe - it is a great rub. I did use only 1 tsp of cayenne pepper as I didnt want it to overwhelm the other spices. It was perfect The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. Even my son, who is somewhat picky, said it was delicious. If you have left overs, try to get some of the rub on the inner parts of the breast by placing it against other pieces that still have skin on. I put all the little pieces together and smothered them in any remaining juices on the serving platter Yummy Definitely a keeper for our family and a great dish if youre having guests

  • Was great, very moist and flavorful

  • I didnt care too much for it.

  • Was a great receipe. Was first time trying. And will make it again. Loved it.

  • I made this using the exact recipe, and it turns out tender, moist, and delicious every time. I put the remaining spices in the can before it goes in the grill.

  • Simply amazing I dont use cumin or cayenne pepper and I reduce the paprika and slightly increase the rest - still the best Definitely use an onion in the neck. I cook it in a beer can chicken wok thing and use the extra spice mix and some oil over some carrots, sugar snap peas and peppers and cook them in the wok for the last 15-20 minutes. Love it

  • Thank you Clay for a great rub to step up Beer Can Chicken to the next level. Very nice indeed. I will admit to cheating though....I used 1/2 a can of Coors Light instead of Bud. Sigh.... I know.. dont blame me, I dont buy beer and the last house guest that brought beer, brought Coors I usually end up using soda for these chickens so beer was a treat. I will keep this rub in am "rub" arsenal. Good Stuff

  • Awesome

  • This. Was. Awesome

  • Ive made this recipe 3 times. Its excellent. Ive also tried some of the other beer can chicken recipes on here but this one is the best. Be careful to not put too much of the rub under the skin as it can overpower the flavor with too much spice, other than that, its very easy. I use a meat thermometer and let it reach 165 with the indirect heat cooking method. Well done Clay

  • Used 5lb. chicken and cooked just a little longer. Swwet onion fell out of the neck cavity, but chicken was very moist and tender.

  • Made it tonight and it was a hit. I was thinking the spice mixture had too many ingredients in it, but I pretty much followed it and it was very good. I ran into an issue using cheap briquettes, but was able to finish the bird off with a gas BBQ that is part of my outdoor cooking set-up. I used Bud Light Lime beer, but I think just about anything would be good as the liquid steams up through the cavity. Ive used Dr. Pepper before and it was good as well, but I think its the rub that sets this off. Whatever rub you choose, getting it under the skin (I used toothpicks to stitch the skin back together) and inside is key. I let mine set after the rub for about 1.5 hours before I set it on the grill. I also used a digital remote thermometer and tracked it to 165 deg. Pulled the bird out of the BBQ and let it set for 10 mins. Spectactular

  • Was a great receipe. Was first time trying. And will make it again. Loved it.

  • Unbelievably good Nice kick to it. A little difficult on a charcoal grill, keep it cooking and watch the meat thermometer. It fell off the bones and was so moist. Looking forward forward to having friends over for it next time. Give it a try

  • Delicious

  • Good eatin Just the right amount of spice if you like a little kick. Comes off the grill extremely moist. Never any leftover. I set it in a shallow pan on the grill for easy clean up.

  • Great recipe Use the leftovers to make a pot pie, its delicious Veggies, potatoes (cream of potato soup works too), chicken, pie crusts. Yum

Uvalde school police chief on leave after mass shooting

DALLAS (AP) — The Uvalde school district's police chief was put on leave Wednesday following allegations that he erred in his response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Hal Harrell said that he put schools police Chief Pete Arredondo on administrative leave because the facts of what happened remain unclear. In a statement, Harrell did not address Arredondo's actions as on-site commander during the attack but said he didn't know when details of federal, state and local investigations into the law enforcement response to the slayings would be revealed.

"From the beginning of this horrible event, I shared that the district would wait until the investigation was complete before making personnel decisions," Harrell said. "Because of the lack of clarity that remains and the unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations, I have made the decision to place Chief Arredondo on administrative leave effective on this date."

A spokesperson for the Uvalde school district, Anne Marie Espinoza, declined to say whether Arredondo would continue to be paid while on leave.

Uvalde 11-year-old was avid runner, is remembered for energy

Another officer will assume the embattled chief's duties, Harrell said.

Col. Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told a state Senate hearing on Tuesday that Arredondo made "terrible decisions" as the massacre unfolded on May 24 , and that the police response was an "abject failure."

Three minutes after 18-year-old Salvador Ramos entered the school, sufficient armed law enforcement were on scene to stop the gunman, McCraw testified. Yet police officers armed with rifles waited in a school hallway for more than an hour while the gunman carried out the massacre. The classroom door could not be locked from the inside, but there is no indication officers tried to open the door while the gunman was inside, McCraw said.

McCraw has said parents begged police outside the school to move in and students inside the classroom repeatedly pleaded with 911 operators for help while more than a dozen officers waited in a hallway. Officers from other agencies urged Arredondo to let them move in because children were in danger.

"The only thing stopping a hallway of dedicated officers from entering Room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children," McCraw said.

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin pushed back on McCraw's testimony casting blame on Arredondo, saying the Department of Public Safety has repeatedly put out false information about the shooting and glossed over the role of its own officers.

McLaughlin called Tuesday's Senate hearing a "clown show" and said he heard nothing from McCraw about state troopers' involvement, even though McLaughlin said their number in the school hallway at points during the slaughter surpassed that of any other law enforcement agency.

Delays in the police response as the shooting was happening has become the focus of ongoing investigations and public outcry. Law enforcement has at times offered confusing and sometimes contradictory details and timelines that have drawn anger and frustration.

The Uvalde City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously against giving Arredondo — who is a council member — a leave of absence from appearing at public meetings. Relatives of the shooting victims had pleaded with city leaders to instead fire him.

"Please, please, we're begging you, get this man out of our lives," said Berlinda Arreola, the grandmother of Amerie Jo Garza, a 10-year-old who was fatally shot in the attack.

Sen. Paul Bettencourt told the state Senate hearing that Arredondo should have stepped down straight away.

"This man should have removed himself from the job immediately because, just looking at his response, he was incapable of it," Bettencourt said.

Arredondo and his lawyer have declined repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press and did not immediately respond to an inquiry Wednesday about his leave.

Arredondo has tried to defend his actions, telling the Texas Tribune that he didn't consider himself the commander in charge of operations and that he assumed someone else had taken control of the law enforcement response. He said he didn't have his police and campus radios but that he used his cellphone to call for tactical gear, a sniper and the classroom keys.

It's still not clear why it took so long for police to enter the classroom, how they communicated with each other during the attack, and what their body cameras show.

Officials have declined to release more details, citing the investigation.

Arredondo, 50, grew up in Uvalde and spent much of his nearly 30-year career in law enforcement in the city. He took the head police job at the school district in 2020 and was sworn in as a member of the City Council in a closed-door ceremony May 31.

Wall Street gets back to tumbling after 1-day reprieve

Wall Street gets spine to tumbling following 1-day reprieve

NEW YORK (AP) — Markets worldwide are spine to tumbling on Thursday, with every one other accompanied by Wall Street is down violently 3% inside a widespread wipeout while worries concerning a fragile affluence roar spine to the fore.

The S&P 500 was 3.3% foot inside afternoon trading, additional than reversing its blip of a 1.5% rally from a day before. Analysts had warned of additional large swings specified deep uncertainties concerning whether the Federal Reserve with every one other accompanied by other centre banks tin tiptoe the small footpath of hiking attentiveness rates sufficient to obtain inflation under jurisdiction nevertheless not so a a large amount of that they source a recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 755 points, or 2.5%, at 29,911, while of 12:09 p.m. Eastern time, with every one other accompanied by the Nasdaq composite was 4.2% lower. The S&P 500 was on track for its sixth mislaying inside the last septet days, with every one other accompanied by all nevertheless five of the 500 companies inside the register were lower.

Wall Street fell accompanied by stocks across Europe following centre banks there followed up on the Federal Reserve's interest-rate hike on Wednesday. The Bank of England raised its answer percentage for the fifth hour dated since December, though it opted for a additional self-effacing 0.25 percentage points than the 0.75-point mallet brought by the Fed.

Switzerland's centre bank, meanwhile, raised rates for the earliest hour dated inside years, a half-point hike. Taiwan's centre edge raised its answer percentage by an eighth of a point. Japan's centre edge began a two-day gathering on policy, though it's held not here on raising rates with every one other accompanied by making other economy-slowing moves that investors call "hawkish."

"The understandable read-through here is the FOMC (Fed) has unleashed the centre edge Hawkish Genie from the bottle, with every one other accompanied by we should expect additional aggressive follow-through from other centre banks except those who are economically challenged," Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said inside a commentary.

Such moves with every one other accompanied by expectations for prosperity additional around the world have sent all kinds of investments tumbling this year, from bonds to bitcoin. Higher attentiveness rates slow the affluence by design, inside hopes of stamping not here inflation. But they're a blunt tool that tin choke off the affluence if used excessively aggressively.

"Another be about is that accompanied by the alter inside policy, there's been weakening monetary facts already," said Bill Northey, older investing director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. "That raises the likelihood of a recession inside the latter small portion of 2022 into 2023."

The worries dragged the S&P 500 into a convey market earlier this week, meaning it had dropped additional than 20% from its peak. It's now additional than 23% beneath its record place early this year, with every one other accompanied by it's spine to where it was inside late 2020.

Not only is the Federal Reserve hiking short-term rates, it too this month began allowing some of the trillions of dollars of bonds it purchased into and not here of the pandemic to roll off its stability sheet. That should place upward pressure on longer-term attentiveness rates.

The U.S. affluence is still mostly holding up, driven inside specific by a strong jobs market. Fewer workers filed for unemployment benefits last week than a week before, a report showed on Thursday. But additional signs of problems have been emerging.

On Thursday, one report showed homebuilders broke ground on fewer homes last month. Rising mortgage rates resulting straight from the Fed's moves are digging into the industry. A separate perusal on manufacturing inside the mid-Atlantic neighbourhood too unexpectedly fell.

"Corporate income estimates have not yet changed to reflect some of the softening monetary facts with every one other accompanied by that could lead to the following lower limb of this repricing," Northey said.

More economists are considering the possibility of a U.S. recession. At Deutsche Bank, economists have inside recent months moved up their forecast for when a recession may hit. They see it occurring around mid 2023.

Treasury yields were swinging on Thursday, accompanied by the 10-year yield down to 3.33% from 3.39% late Wednesday. It had climbed while high while 3.48% earlier inside the morning, near its highest flat since 2011.

Higher rates have been delivering the hardest hits to the investments that soared the most into and not here of the pandemic, benefiting from the easy, ultralow rates. That includes bitcoin with every one other accompanied by high-growth technology stocks.

Drops for Apple, Amazon, Tesla with every one other accompanied by other large tech-oriented stocks provided some of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500. Each fell at least 3.8%.

But the sharpest losses came for stocks whose profits be contingent on additional on the ability of the affluence with every one other accompanied by whether customers tin retain up their purchases amid the highest inflation inside decades.

Cruise operator Carnival fell 10.1%, with every one other accompanied by Capital One Financial dropped 7.7%.

It's all a sharp turnaround from a day earlier, when stocks rallied on Wall Street straight away following the Fed's biggest hike to rates since 1994. Analysts said investors seemed to latch onto a remark from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who said mega-hikes of three-quarters of a percentage point would not exist common.

Powell said Wednesday the Fed is moving "expeditiously" to obtain rates closer to normal levels following last week's stunning report that showed inflation at the purchaser flat unexpectedly accelerated last month, which dashed hopes that inflation may have by that hour dated peaked.

The Fed is "not trying to induce a recession now, let's exist understandable concerning that," Powell said. He called Wednesday's large grow "front-end loading."

"Despite their assurance, it's unclear to me whether the Fed has the tools they speak they do to tamp down prices," said Jason Brady, CEO of Thornburg Investment Management. He too said that flat following its mega-hike on Wednesday, which was triple the usual amount, "the Fed is still behind."

Even lacking recession, higher attentiveness rates build investors less willing to pay high prices for investments, mainly those seen while the most costly or the most risky.

Bitcoin has been menacing to let fall to $20,000 following setting a record at almost $69,000 late last year. It was at $20,977 inside afternoon trading, down 1.8% over the last 24 hours, according to CoinDesk.

Vegan Green Smoothie Reviews

  • Its not bad. Definitely has a banana flavor though, and unfortunately I dont care for bananas. If I were to do it again, Id probably only use half or a third of one. However, most people dont test something they dont like the ingredients in, so I wont knock it for thatI did change some proportions - only 1.5 c coconut water because thats the size of my bottle. About 8 strawberries. No dates, as I have none, I sweetened with a little sugar.Last, your smoothie will not be green, as I anticipated by the name. The strawberries (and probably dates) will change that.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris will have an chance to fasten accompanied by leaders from Latin America with every one other accompanied by the Caribbean while she welcomes them to her place of residence condition this week for the Summit of the Americas. Brian Winter, vice president of the Council of the Americas, said Harris got off on the incorrect foot while Biden's point human being assigned to address the root communal with every one other accompanied by monetary causes driving migrants to the U.S. In a May 2021 policy speech delivered to Winter's international work category from Washington, Harris, a former California prosecutor, mentioned corruption no indeed fewer than 10 times, stirring resentment inside a neighbourhood where leaders are sensitive to taking lectures from U.S. policymakers.

"Corruption is a enormous problem, nevertheless clearly there are additional fine ways to hold this," said Winter. "A a large amount of doors closed flat earlier to she got on the ground."

Harris' biggest attainment inside the neighbourhood to day is having helped firm commitments from U.S. companies to place money into $1.2 billion inside Central America, from where every one year hundreds of thousands of mostly young adults run gang violence with every one other accompanied by crushing poverty.

At the summit, she's expected to announce another $1.9 billion inside commitments, according to a older Biden management official who declined to exist identified earlier to the announcements. The commitments reflect Harris' belief inside the private sector's ability to create jobs that foster monetary grow with every one other accompanied by discourage young adults from abandoning their homes.

New initiatives actuality announced include a $700 million expansion of cellular networks inside Guatemala, Honduras with every one other accompanied by El Salvador by Miami-based Millicom; a $270 million commitment by Visa to go forward digital payments; with every one other accompanied by a $150 million nearshoring investing by the Gap. Inc. that could see while numerous while 5,000 jobs created closer to the U.S.

But the Biden administration's biggest policy proposal inside the neighbourhood — a $4 billion assistance package for Central America — has stalled inside Congress accompanied by little evident attempt to revive it. Meanwhile, the number of migrants at the U.S. border accompanied by Mexico has surged to its highest levels inside decades, flat while the Biden management has little to show for the Democratic president's word of honour while a candidate to introduce a "humane" asylum system that would shatter accompanied by Trump-era restrictions.

One be brave enough is finding partners inside a neighbourhood where institutions are weak, gang violence is prolific with every one other accompanied by corruption is rampant.

It's possible that none of the countries that Harris is tasked accompanied by employed accompanied by will exist represented at the summit by its president. In recent months, the U.S. has taken a strident timbre opposed to El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, whom it accuses of using his popularity to amass ability with every one other accompanied by ride roughshod over democratic checks with every one other accompanied by balances.

Meanwhile, Guatemala President Alejandro Giammettei said last month that he would not attend following the U.S. criticized his decision to reappoint an attorney general it alleged was associated accompanied by inside corruption.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment was Honduras' President Xiomara Castro, who has won commend from U.S. officials for her decision to extradite her predecessor, Juan Orlando Hernández, to the U.S. to face confederate medicine charges. Harris, who attended Castro's inauguration inside January, inside recent days spoke accompanied by Honduras' earliest feminine president inside a last ditch attempt to prevail on her to journey to Los Angeles.

But inside the extremity Castro sided accompanied by fellow leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico inside boycotting the summit. Surely weighing on her decision was the U.S.′ fast recognition of a new management following Honduras' military removed her husband, President Manuel Zelaya, from office inside 2009.

"It's a a lengthy way tougher place of actors that the U.S. has to deal accompanied by flat compared to what the Obama management faced," said Rebecca Bill Chavez, president of the Inter-American Dialogue.

Chavez, who advised Harris on overseas policy throughout her brief presidential run, welcomed the vice president's focus on gender-based violence with every one other accompanied by feminine migrants, something that was lost from past administrations. She's too hopeful that Harris' familial ties to Jamaica — her newcomer father's birthplace — could assist her fasten to leaders inside the Caribbean who are overlooked flat inside Latin America policy circles.

But Biden's record is durable to top. As vice president he made 16 trips to Latin America with every one other accompanied by his presence inside the neighbourhood has loomed large since his days while chairperson of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, when he helped skill Plan Colombia, by a lengthy way the U.S.′ biggest military with every one other accompanied by monetary assistance package inside the region.

Chavez said that on issues of climate change, migration with every one other accompanied by inclusive monetary growth, the Biden management has the chance to lay not here a eyesight accompanied by appeal to all countries no indeed matter their ideological bent or bilateral agenda accompanied by the U.S.

"To succeed she with every one other accompanied by the Biden management really needs to broaden their scope," said Chavez. "Los Angeles is the perfect chance for them to show they are so. But it can't exist a one with every one other accompanied by done event. It requires go nearer behind into and not here of to become reality."

US naval officer in Japan faces prison over deadly crash

US naval officer inside Japan faces prison over deadly crash

WASHINGTON (AP) — For Ridge Alkonis, a U.S. Navy lieutenant living inside Japan, a springtime trip accompanied by his spouse with every one other accompanied by trio children to Mount Fuji was intended while pleasure with every one other accompanied by leisurely family hour dated earlier to an expected deployment.

What happened next, with every one other accompanied by why, is a matter of dispute. But it gave rise to a three-year prison sentence.

In the telling by Alkonis' family with every one other accompanied by supporters, the naval officer abruptly lost awareness inside the car, causing him to slump over behind the disc following suffering acute peak sickness. Japanese prosecutors with every one other accompanied by the judge who sentenced him contend he fell sleeping while drowsy, shirking a duty to pull over immediately.

No matter the cause, Alkonis' automobile veered into parked cars with every one other accompanied by pedestrians inside a parking lot, striking an elderly woman with every one other accompanied by her son-in-law, both of whom subsequent died. With a Japanese court of rules and regulations place to hear an appeal Wednesday of Alkonis' prison sentence, his parents are pleading for leniency for an take deed they speak was nothing additional than a dreadful accident nevertheless that prosecutors view while deadly negligence. He is place of residence inside Japan pending the appeal.

"The word that comes to our cerebrum is fairness. We want him to exist treated justly for an accident," said Alkonis' father, Derek Alkonis, of Dana Point, California. "We don't be in touch exist fond of it's been that way. We know it hasn't been that way. And it concerns us that our son has been specified a three-year prison judgement for an accident."

The victims' families could not exist contacted by The Associated Press since their names are redacted inside court of rules and regulations records reviewed by the AP.

The upcoming hearing is the latest evolution inside the instance opposed to Alkonis, 34, a expert inside underseas warfare with every one other accompanied by acoustic engineering who has spent almost septet years inside Japan while a civilian volunteer with every one other accompanied by naval officer.

In the leap of 2021, following a time of land-based assignments, the Southern California native was preparing for a deployment while a dividing head on the USS Benfold, a missile destroyer.

On May 29, 2021, accompanied by the task looming, his family place not here for an excursion of Mount Fuji hiking with every one other accompanied by sightseeing.

They had climbed a part of the peak with every one other accompanied by were spine inside the car, heading to lunch with every one other accompanied by ice lotion near the base of Mount Fuji. Alkonis was talking accompanied by his daughter, at that hour dated 7, when his family says he straight away fell knocked out behind the wheel. He was so not here of it, they say, that neither his daughter's screams to wake up nor the impact of the collision roused him.

After the crash near Fujinomiya, he was arrested by Japanese authorities with every one other accompanied by held for 26 days inside solitary confinement at a police detention facility, interrogated multiple times a day with every one other accompanied by was not specified a medical behaviour towards or evaluation, according to a statement of facts provided by a family spokesman. That statement says that when American authorities arrived to lay clasp of Alkonis into custody with every one other accompanied by return him to a U.S. base, he by that hour dated was held by the Japanese.

He was indicted on a ask in remittance of a negligent driving, resulting inside death, with every one other accompanied by sentenced last October to trio years inside prison. The ask in remittance carries up to septet years imprisonment inside Japan. He has appealed.

English-language court of rules and regulations records obtained by the AP show that the judge expressed skepticism over the peak sickness claim, citing an initial statement from Alkonis to police inside which he said he felt drowsy following driving into and not here of mountainous curves.

He subsequent testified to touch sudden peak sickness — a finding supported by a neurologist's June 2021 diagnosis — nevertheless the judge said such a sensation should have abated while Alkonis drove down the mountain.

The judge said that though it was conceivable Alkonis was suffering from illumination peak sickness, it was difficult to imagine he went from not touch drowsy at all to becoming straight away incapacitated.

A Navy spokesperson said Alkonis remains on operative duty with every one other accompanied by that the Navy has provided him with every one other accompanied by his family "with the whole-person protected from danger keeping with every one other accompanied by support they need." A legal practitioner for Alkonis declined to comment.

The instance is playing not here opposed to the backdrop of long-standing concerns by Japan concerning bad behavior, nevertheless sporadic, by the tens of thousands of U.S. work members inside the country with every one other accompanied by a sensory power that they are afforded preferential treatment. A 2014 AP investigation found that at U.S. military bases inside Japan, most work members judged culpable inside sexual intercourse crimes inside recent years did not go to prison, accompanied by offenders while an alternative routinely punished by demotions, fines or removal from the military.

This instance is different, though, inside that Alkonis is not accused of acting accompanied by some nefarious intent, with every one other accompanied by he with every one other accompanied by his family speak they have taken repeated steps to convey remorse with every one other accompanied by to receive responsibility.

The family says they were encouraged by Alkonis' legal practitioner to cooperate, plead culpable with every one other accompanied by pay restitution to the victims' families — which they did, by signing a $1.65 million settlement, concerning fifty per cent of of which was raised from savings with every one other accompanied by friends with every one other accompanied by family.

"Ridge has said from day one, minute one: All he wants to do is assist this family. He feels the burden of what happened that day," said his mother, Suzi Alkonis. "We all do."

Eric Feldman, a professor of Japanese rules and regulations at the University of Pennsylvania, said that instinct is mainly understandable inside Japan, where the criminal justice system values expressions of remorse with every one other accompanied by where remittance to victims tin occasionally avert criminal prosecution. It's a system that gives specific focus to serving the interests of victims.

"There's a general view that what you don't want to do inside Japan is to carry on accompanied by to proclaim one's innocence," Feldman said.

In this case, however, the criminal instance has not gone away, with every one other accompanied by Suzi Alkonis said it was frustrating that displays of remorse tin seem to actually labour opposed to her son inside the courtroom. She feels worry for her son, uncertain of the lasting impact the instance will have on his military career, nevertheless too suffering for the victims.

"There are people who build really bad decisions with every one other accompanied by there's mercy for people who build bad decisions," she said. "We be in touch exist fond of we would deep affection a little mercy since Ridge has spent his lifetime trying to build good decisions. And at that hour dated to have an accident go nearer not here of the blue, it's by that hour dated exist sore one family so poorly — with every one other accompanied by it's it's hurting this one."

Tulsa shooting highlights vulnerability of hospitals

Tulsa shooting highlights vulnerability of hospitals

Hospitals, like schools, are not typically designed to guard against the threat of a determined gunman entering the building to take lives.

The vulnerability of health care facilities was highlighted by a shooter who killed four people and then himself Wednesday at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The assailant got inside a building on the Saint Francis Hospital campus with little trouble, just hours after buying an AR-style rifle, authorities said.

Here's a look at what's known about security at the Tulsa facility and other American hospitals:

DID THE GUNMAN HAVE TO PASS THROUGH SECURITY?

No, the 45-year-old man identified as the shooter, Michael Louis, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, parked his car in an adjoining garage, then went through unlocked doors into the medical building, authorities said.

"It is an entry that is open to the public," Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin told reporters Thursday. "He was able to walk in without any type of challenge."

It was a short walk from that entrance to the office area where Louis fatally shot his primary target, Dr. Preston Phillips. Police said Phillips recently performed surgery on Louis and that Louis blamed the doctor for chronic pain he still suffered.

Once Louis got in, "he began firing at anyone who was in his way," Franklin said. At least one person holding a door open for others to escape was killed.

COULD BETTER SECURITY HAVE STOPPED THE SHOOTER?

The president and CEO of Saint Francis Health System said nothing can stop somebody with guns "hellbent on causing harm."

Dr. Cliff Robertson did not provide details about hospital security. He said the facility has procedures to deal with "difficult, unhappy patients," though he did not elaborate.

Hospital officials planned to review their security procedures in the days ahead. There "will be a thousand questions" to answer regarding the shooting, Robertson said.

From official accounts, the reaction time of officers could not have been much better. Wendell said officers responded to the shooting within minutes and that the shooter apparently killed himself as police approached.

IS IT STANDARD FOR HOSPITALS TO LEAVE SOME ENTRYWAYS OPEN?

Yes, because some urgent medical situations require patients to be moved quickly. But some hospitals, especially ones that have dealt with violence on their grounds, have upgraded security in recent years.

Mercy Hospital in Chicago beefed up security after a 2019 attack in which a man fatally shot an attending physician who was his ex-fiance in the parking lot. He then entered the hospital, where he shot and killed a pharmacy resident and a police officer before he was fatally shot himself.

Now security officers are stationed at every entrance, and the hospital has a system that electronically notifies employees of any armed intruders.

HOW COMMON ARE SHOOTINGS AT HOSPITALS?

From 2000 to 2011, there were 154 hospital-related shootings, according to a 2017 guide from the International Association of Emergency Medical Services Chiefs that cited the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Nearly 60 percent of those shootings were inside hospitals, and around 40 were outside on hospital grounds, the guide said.

The attacks resulted in 235 people wounded or killed, according to the guide, which also cited data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that indicated violence is four times more likely in health care than in other industries.

WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE CHALLENGES FOR HOSPITALS?

Some patients have limited mobility, and many staff members are obligated to stay with them in dangerous situations, sometimes making quick evacuations impossible.

Also, hospital buildings are often labyrinths, with many doors that lead to more doors. The Tulsa police chief said that was the case in the shooting on Wednesday, when the building's vastness created echoes, which made it harder for officers and others inside to know precisely where the gunshots were coming from.

WHAT ELSE HAVE HOSPITALS DONE TO IMPROVE SECURITY?

Even before the 2019 shooting at Chicago Mercy, the hospital had begun training employees about what to do during an active gunman situation. That included instructions on retreating into rooms, locking doors and turning out lights.

Training sessions at the hospital that were held annually before the 2019 shooting are now held four times a year, said Paul Stewart, a spokesman for the hospital, which is now called Insight Hospital and Medical Center.

Out of concern about people entering with guns, some hospitals have also installed metal detectors. At Chicago's UI Health, which is affiliated with the University of Illinois, metal detectors were installed in the emergency room, though not nearly as many as nurses and other health care workers asked for.

Nurses complain that patients entering with guns are far too common.

"They did that after someone brought in a semi-automatic weapon and was actually making a video on his phone about how he was going to kill nurses," said Paul Pater, a nurse at the hospital.

Uvalde school police chief says he’s still cooperating

Uvalde school police chief says he's still cooperating

The school district police chief who served as on-site commander during last week's deadly shooting in Uvalde, Texas, said Wednesday that he's talking daily with investigators, contradicting claims from state law enforcement that he has stopped cooperating.

In a brief interview, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo told CNN that he's speaking regularly with Texas Department of Public Safety investigators.

"I've been on the phone with them every day," Arredondo said. The chief has been the focus of ire in the community and beyond over allegations that he delayed sending officers into the school on May 24, believing that the gunman was barricaded inside adjoining classrooms and the children were no longer at risk.

Nineteen children and two teachers died in the attack at Robb Elementary School, the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade. Funerals began this week, and U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona attended Wednesday's services for teacher Irma Garcia, who was killed in the attack, and her husband, Joe Garcia, who died of a heart attack two days later.

The district announced Wednesday that students and staff would not return to that campus, though plans were still being finalized on where the less than 600 students would attend classes in the fall.

'Very angry': Uvalde locals grapple with school chief's role

Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said Wednesday that his office is working with state and federal agencies to request upwards of $45 million in federal funding for the school.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, its School Emergency Response to Violence, known as Project SERV, "funds short-term education-related services" to help educational facilities "recover from a violent or traumatic event in which the learning environment has been disrupted."

Gutierrez said he is unaware of any plans to tear down Robb Elementary but that funds obtained through the program by other schools have traditionally been used to rebuild.

State officials have said 19 police officers waited for more than an hour outside the classroom where Salvador Ramos, 18, opened fire, despite repeated pleas from children calling 911 for help.

Travis Considine, chief communications officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Tuesday that Arredondo had not responded to DPS requests for two days, while other officers in the Uvalde city and schools police departments continue to sit for interviews and provide statements.

Arredondo has not responded to multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. Considine told AP Wednesday that Arredondo had not responded to Texas Rangers' requests for follow up interviews as of Tuesday. The Texas Rangers — the investigative arm of the Department of Public Safety that focuses on major crimes —had no immediate response to Arredondo's insistence he was in regular touch with DPS.

The Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, which represents police officers, has urged its members to cooperate with "all government investigations" into the shooting and police response, and endorsed a federal probe by the Justice Department.

The confusing and sometimes contradictory information released in the week since the deadly shooting continued Tuesday with the revelation that the exterior door used by the gunman was not left propped open by a teacher, as police previously said.

They have now determined that the teacher, who has not been identified, propped the door open with a rock, but then removed the rock and closed the door when she realized there was a shooter on campus, Considine said. But, Considine said, the door that was designed to lock when shut did not lock.

"We did verify she closed the door. The door did not lock. We know that much and now investigators are looking into why it did not lock," Considine said.

Considine said the teacher initially propped the door open but ran back inside to get her phone and call 911 when Ramos crashed his truck on campus.

"She came back out while on her phone, she heard someone yell, 'He has a gun!', she saw him jump the fence and that he had a gun, so she ran back inside," removing the rock when she did, Considine said.

Since the shooting, law enforcement and state officials have struggled to present an accurate timeline and details of the event and how police responded, sometimes providing conflicting information or withdrawing some statements hours later. State police have said some accounts were preliminary and may change as more witnesses are interviewed.

On Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott asked top lawmakers to convene a legislative committee to examine and make recommendations on "school safety, mental health, social media, police training, firearm safety and more."

The next Texas legislative session is scheduled for January 2023, although some lawmakers have urged Abbott to call a special session in response to the shooting.

After previous mass shootings at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Santa Fe High School and a Walmart in El Paso, Abbott convened "roundtable" discussions, sometimes involving survivors and victims' families.

After the 2018 shooting at Santa Fe High School, lawmakers in 2019 approved $100 million for schools to improve campus safety with metal detectors, vehicle barriers, shooter alarms systems and other safety measures. They also allowed more teachers to carry guns on campus and be trained in campus shooter response.

But Abbott and state lawmakers resisted calls for stricter gun ownership measures. In 2021, Abbott signed into law a measure that allows people 21 and older to carry handguns without a license or training. In Uvalde on Wednesday, Ramos' mother was denied service at the drive-thru. Adriana Reyes then walked into an adjacent convenience store where the cashier said she would not be served.

She declined to speak with an Associated Press reporter on the scene, saying: "I don't want to be rude but I don't want to say anything."

O'Rourke bets shooting will shake up Texas governor's race

O'Rourke bets shooting will shake up Texas governor's race

WASHINGTON (AP) — Still mourning a Texas mass shooting, Democrat Beto O'Rourke gave his long-shot campaign a jolt by imploring a national audience that it was finally time for real action to curb the proliferation of high-powered guns in his home state and across America.

That was 2019, and the former congressman was running for president when he declared during a debate, "Hell, yes, we're gonna take your AR-15," weeks after a gunman targeting Mexican immigrants killed 23 people at a Wal-Mart in O'Rourke's native El Paso.

Last week, following the massacre of 19 elementary school students and two teachers by an 18-year-old man with an AR-15-style rifle in Uvalde, Texas, O'Rourke — now campaigning for governor — again briefly seized the national political spotlight. This time, that meant crashing the news conference of the man he wants to unseat, Republican Greg Abbott, and declaring — in a moment subsequently viewed widely online — that the carnage was "on you."

O'Rourke is betting that the tragedy can reset the governor's race in America's largest red state — despite Abbott twice previously winning election by landslides and having begun the campaign with $55 million in the bank and despite gun culture looming larger in Texas than perhaps anywhere else.

2022 Midterm elections

Vermont likely to elect its 1st woman to Congress this year

Several Alabama legislators lose to primary challengers

Christian nationalism on the rise in some GOP campaigns

New England senators want more federal money for elections

It didn't work in 2019. O'Rourke's debate declaration won him praise from other Democrats on stage and a fundraising bump. But he dropped out of the race barely six weeks later.

It's too early to tell what will happen in the governor's race, but the shooting has already affected both parties. Abbott canceled his planned visit to the annual National Rifle Association meeting to remain in Uvalde. Also skipping it was Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who is among those negotiating with Democratic colleagues on strengthening background checks and "red flag" laws allowing authorities to remove firearms from those determined to be a danger to themselves or others.

"I think it felt cathartic for a lot of people that maybe might have been on the fence," said Abel Prado, executive director of the Democratic advocacy group Cambio Texas. "It gives you, 'At least somebody's trying to stand up and do something, or at least say something.'"

O'Rourke spent two nights in Uvalde after the shooting, then headed to Houston for a rally against gun violence outside Friday's meeting of the NRA.

"To those men and women in positions of power who care more about your power than using that power to save the lives of those that you are supposed to serve .... we will defeat you and we will overcome you," O'Rourke told protesters who chanted his name and the phrase "Vote them out!

Supporters hope O'Rourke recaptures the magic that saw him become a national Democratic star and nearly upset Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. But since then, O'Rourke's White House bid fizzled, former President Donald Trump easily won Texas in 2020 and Democrats who had hoped to flip scores of congressional and legislative seats in the state that year lost nearly every top race.

A Democrat also hasn't won Texas' governorship since 1990, and, just last year, the state loosened firearm restrictions enough to allow virtually any resident age 21 and older to carry guns without a license. Abbott signed that law alongside NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and the group's president, Carolyn Meadows.

Of course, the domination of guns in Texas culture has long predated the law. Abbott once tweeted his embarrassment at his state lagging California in gun sales, and Cruz is fond of saying, "Give me a horse, a gun and an open plain, and we can conquer the world." Former Republican Gov. Rick Perry cruised to reelection in 2010 after using a laser-sighted handgun to kill a coyote while jogging.

Mass shootings are similarly not new in Texas. Tuesday's massacre in Uvalde and the El Paso killings followed a mass shooting at Santa Fe High School outside Houston that killed eight students and two teachers in 2018, and a church rampage in Sutherland Springs that left 26 people dead, including an unborn child, the year before.

Former Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, a Republican long famous for carrying multiple guns nearly everywhere he went, said O'Rourke's most ardent supporters will be "even more determined to vote for Beto" after his confrontation with Abbott.

Still Patterson said the clash could backfire, alienating otherwise potentially sympathetic swing voters who might think O'Rourke was putting on a self-serving show.

"Sometimes your method overwhelms your message, and his method gutted whatever benefit he might have accrued," said Patterson, who, as a state senator, wrote Texas' original, 1995 concealed handgun law allowing Texans to take firearms more places than nearly anywhere in America at the time. "I think it's a net loss."

Abbott hasn't mentioned O'Rourke much since the shooting but answered questions about possible new state gun limits by slamming high crime rates in cities primarily run by Democrats.

"There are more people shot every weekend in Chicago than there are in schools in Texas," the governor said hyperbolically. Speaking of arguments that new firearms restrictions could make Americans safer, "Chicago and LA and New York disprove that thesis."

Abbott's campaign has also previously chided O'Rourke for his previous stand on guns, producing an online ad last year showing a cartoon of O'Rourke speeding the wrong direction down a one-way street, then off a cliff while the radio plays clips of his "Hell yes" comment and other strongly progressive positions he took as a presidential candidate.

O'Rourke's campaign insists he's not using the massacre for political gain. It transformed its fundraising apparatus into one accepting donations for relatives of those killed in Uvalde, and says O'Rourke attended the Abbott news conference at the urging of one of the victims' families.

He sat quietly in the audience for 10-plus minutes, intending only to listen, the campaign said. But, when Abbott said "there was no meaningful forewarning of this crime" other than the gunman posting about the shooting just moments before he began doing so, O'Rourke got angry — especially given that, after the El Paso shooting, the state's chief response was to loosen gun laws. He approached the stage and accused Abbott of "doing nothing" when the the Uvalde violence had been "totally predictable."

Also on stage was Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, who responded with an obscenity and called O'Rourke "sick" for trying to make the shooing "a political issue."

But it nonetheless helped one Texan change her mind. Nicole Armijo, who works in her family's HVAC business in the border city of McAllen and has three kids, ages 10, 9 and 6, attending public school. She didn't vote for O'Rourke when he ran for Senate but plans to now because "the way we're doing things is not working."

"Maybe, Texas, it's not just about having a gun," said Armijo, who said she loves guns and hunting but would support expanded background checks. "Beto's kind of portrayed those thoughts: It's not about me or you. It's about everyone as a whole."

Uvalde school police chief faulted in shooting response

Uvalde educational organization police leader faulted inside shooting response

The police official blamed for not sending officers inside additional fast to place an extremity to the Uvalde, Texas, educational organization shooting is the leader of the educational organization system's small police force, a component dedicated ordinarily to building relationships accompanied by students with every one other accompanied by responding to the occasional fight.

Preparing for pile shootings is a small small portion of what educational organization police officers do, nevertheless local experts speak the preparation for officers assigned to schools inside Texas — including mandatory operative shooter training — provides them accompanied by while firm a footing while any.

"The tactical, conceptual mindset is certainly there inside Texas," said Joe McKenna, deputy superintendent for the Comal educational organization neighbourhood inside Texas with every one other accompanied by a former subordinate director at the state's educational organization safety center.

A gunman killed 19 students with every one other accompanied by set of two teachers at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday. As students called 911, officers waited additional than 45 minutes to challenge the gunman. The district's police chief, Pete Arredondo, decided officers should remain to challenge the gunman on the belief he was barricaded inside adjoining classrooms with every one other accompanied by children were no indeed longer at risk, officials said Friday.

"It was the incorrect decision," Steven McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said at a report conference Friday.

A category of Border Patrol tactical officers would subsequent capture inside a shootout accompanied by the gunman with every one other accompanied by kill him, officials said. Arredondo could not straight away exist reached for remark Friday by the AP.

Across the country, police officers who labour inside schools are tasked accompanied by keeping tabs on who's coming with every one other accompanied by going, employed on building trust so students be in touch comfortable coming to them accompanied by problems, teaching anti-substance abuse programs and, occasionally, making arrests.

The police dividing for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District says on its website that its main goal is "to carry on accompanied by a protected from danger with every one other accompanied by firm environment for our future leaders to learn with every one other accompanied by our contemporaneous leaders to educate while forming partnerships accompanied by students, teachers, parents, with every one other accompanied by the population while enforcing laws with every one other accompanied by reducing fears."

The operative shooter training was mandated by condition lawmakers inside 2019 inside response to educational organization shootings. Under condition law, educational organization districts too are required to have plans to respond to operative shooters inside their crisis response procedures.

Security tin occasionally become lax since educational organization officials with every one other accompanied by officers may not exist convinced by a shooting will at some time occur inside their building, said Lynelle Sparks, a educational organization police officer inside Hillsboro, Texas, with every one other accompanied by administrative director of the Texas Association of School Resource Officers.

"It's always making sure that you are prepared," she said. "People obtain relaxed. It happens inside every one district. You can't speak that it doesn't. It happens everywhere. We obtain to the point, 'Oh my gosh. This is horrific. Safety Safety Safety.' The educational organization year goes by, 'Oh, why do I have to lock my door everyday, you know? I wish that every one teacher would teach behind a locked door. It doesn't build it a prison system. It's concerning lessening lives."

Under the event command approach that was widely adopted following 9/11, it is unsurprising that the educational organization police leader would exist considered the commander, flat following the coming of officers from other agencies, McKenna said. The designated human being would exist considered the leader until relieved by a higher-ranking officer, nevertheless that doesn't necessarily occur straight away when efforts to save lives are continuing, he said.

"Obviously it's still an ongoing investigation, nevertheless it would build sensory power that a police leader of a educational organization neighbourhood would exist the initial event commander," McKenna said.
